Artist’s statement:

“The world seems to me increasingly incomprehensible, and there are times when I feel there isn’t anything that I know for certain. For me, making photographs (or painting, or whatever) is necessary to translate the unintelligible reality of being into a more coherent form. Or at least to illustrate my best guesses. There is vastly more nothing in the universe than something, and I try to create images that recognize the grace by which anything at all exists.”

the end of the school year is so promising and beautiful. relationships have a sense of closure. the sun greets you good morning, telling you that everything will be okay. when it does rain, it exhibits a smell as if a summer-like storm took over the land. the sense of hope among students ignite a desire that is inexplainable. events, parties, and bbqs of all kind make up for the times you’ve been ignored or uninvited from the past year. flowy, frilly, floral dresses cover the sunburnt skin. music sounds lighter, livelier; it finally fits. chitchat about summer adventures overwhelm conversation.

you are told you’ll be missed.

you finally feel loved.

but it’s also heartbreakingly sad and distressing. it’s a transition for everyone, whether large or small, rough or easy. the dorm room starts to lose its meaning. your final grades depend on your academic performance within a week. relationships that you thought would last forever are barely lingering, barely there anymore. summer plans sound unsettling and lonely. the time spent sleeping is interrupted by the gnawing sounds of leaf blowers and lawn mowers. you meet a nice boy weeks before leaving — he might actually get you. you finally feel like everything is falling into place, until you realize that your time here is finished.

that’s how it always is.

“Based on a series of previous experiments by Eliasson that deal with atmospheric density.

Here, Eliasson introduces condensed banks of artificially produced fog into the gallery, shimmering with an artificial light spectrum, created using arrays of red, green and blue fluorescent lamps.

This illusion in light is not something we find in nature, however, as one walks through the space, the sights and sensations experienced become real.

Dimensions are further altered by the substantial lowering of the ceiling along with a nearly 60 meter long curving, inclined wooden floor space which Yansong created within the installation room. The sloping floor challenges visitors to readjust their balance, forcing them to constantly shift their weight and body posture to counterbalance the inclination. This emphasizes the important role of the moving body in the perception of our surroundings. The further visitors venture into the space, the steeper the floors get, reaching the point in which it becomes a wave-like curved wall. Since the ceiling imitates this construction, a seemingly boundless space is discerned above.

Within this installation, insecurity is induced on visitors initially,
reducing visibility, suggesting the need to invent new models for perception.”
